Commercials on During Supernanny
I couldn't find anything to watch on TV so I turned on this show Supernanny. As I've been watching it and listening to the commercials something struck me. There seems to be an unusual number of birth control commercials on during this program. I probably wouldn't have noticed it because the NuvaRing commercial is on TV occasionally, but the previous commercial break had a commercial for Plan B which repulsed me. I think its terrible to have this show on showing the difficulty this family is having with a special needs child, then in-between having all this birth control commercials, especially PlanB. Its like 'gee you don't want to be bogged down like this family right? so birth control it up'. Thats how I took it anyway.

Priest not surprised by Susan Boyle's Performance
Priest not surprised by Scottish woman's performance on British TV
By Simon Caldwell
Catholic News Service
LONDON (CNS) -- The audience snickered and the judges of "Britain's Got Talent" either rolled their eyes or allowed their blank expressions to betray their bemused skepticism as the awkward-looking middle-aged woman told them she wanted to be as famous as the popular British actress and singer Elaine Paige.
Then Susan Boyle began to sing, and they were spellbound and shocked by the beauty of her voice and rose to their feet in applause.
But Father Basil Clark, who watched the show on television at his home in Broxburn, Scotland, was not surprised.
He has seen the situation unfold many times before, having regularly accompanied Boyle, 47, on the annual Legion of Mary pilgrimage to the Marian shrine in Knock, Ireland.
"When I watched the judges' faces it reminded me of what I was like when I first saw Susan singing -- absolutely blown away by the quality of the singing and by that fantastic voice," said Father Clark, dean of West Lothian, the district that covers Boyle's home village of Blackburn.
"Anyone who sees her for the first time behaves the same way. I have never heard her sing badly, though she might lose the words if the stress gets too much," he told Catholic News Service in an April 16 telephone interview.

A Pro-Life Episode of House
Christine writes about a recent episode of House, and its pro-life message. Since this one aired this week it was particularly good timing since we just had the 4th anniversary of Terri Schiavo's death.

EWTN Moved
We just realized that EWTN has been relegated to Digital Cable for Comcast. I have it in my room because I have digital cable, but the rest of the house doesn't. I think its ridiculous that it would be put on an extra pay service as opposed to the standard cable. It was my understanding (or at least it used to be) that EWTN didn't charge for the cable providers to air their programs, so how can they justify putting it on a higher pay scale?
Maybe they just want to hide EWTN's light under a bushel basket.

Supporting Our Troops and Robert Irvine

I love watching Food Network (I'm a regular poster and mod at Food Network Fans - shameless plug). One of my favorite shows on Food Network had been Dinner: Impossible with Chef Robert Irvine. Some months ago a scandal involving Chef Robert sprang up with allegations that he had lied on his resume. Very quickly one of my favorite shows (and a favorite of many posters on Food Network Fans) changed, Chef Robert was no longer host. He has since been replaced by the able Chef Michael Symon of Iron Chef America fame. Symon has never appealed to me as much as Chef Robert, but I'm willing to give him a shot - and I really don't have a choice in the matter anyway.
A new poster on Food Network Fans posting a link to Robert Irvine's new blog - and a post explaining that he will be making a return to TV, just not on Dinner: Impossible. A shame that it won't be Dinner: Impossible, but I am exciting to see him returning, I always enjoyed his presence on TV.
I also want to mention that I am confirming as of this entry that my return to TV with a brand new show is definitely happening. I am excited and I’m really looking forward to getting back in harness. My sincere thanks to all of you have expressed your support. Please check back for specific details!
In the same entry he had written all about visiting some of our injured men and women in uniform and how incredible they are. He wrote about their strength and also how he was able to brighten the day of one by making a simple meal that wasn't hospital food. But he added this paragraph at the end that I thought was a wonderful reminder.
When you are walking around on the streets, in a shopping mall or at an airport, you are going to see men and women in uniform, heroes like the ones who made these astonishing sacrifices. If you find yourself in line with one of them getting a burger or a cup of coffee and you’ve got an extra fiver in your wallet, pick up their tab. Or say thanks for your service. By job description, they are ready to take a bullet for you. We owe them more than we can possibly give them, but little gestures like these might just make their day.
Thanks for the reminder Robert, and I can't wait to see you back on TV.
I posted this on Food Network Fans earlier in the week, but here is my Zune with a picture of Chef Robert. This photo was the wallpaper on my laptop for a while actually.

Our Lady on Wishbone
I wish that someone had the whole episode up because it was a nice one, but this is the end of the Wishbone Episode called Viva Wishbone where they tell the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I remember seeing this on TV when my sister was little. I alwats thought they chose a lovely actress to play Our Lady.

Food Network
On the weekends I tend to watch a lot of Food Network because its one of the few channels we get in Kenosha. I've been seeing the anime-style commercial for Iron Chef America for a while and it has always reminded me of something else. At the end of it Chef Symon's Iron Chef outfit reminds me of a priest's collar. It's because of the very white skin they give him coupled with a black collar, but thats what I see everytime.

I'd say it must be because I hang out at church too much, but really, how could you ever spend too much time at church (and honestly I don't spend that much time there)? I guess its sort of like when I went to that Hawaiian bar and thought the ash tray attached to the wall looked like a holy water font.

Favorite Commercials
I made a post over at Cbabes about some of my favorite commercials. Looking on the ones I posted I must enjoy commercials with a catchy tune.
I've never actually seen this version of the commercial on TV, but its funny.
This is the shorter one that I see all the time.
I actually posted about this one at DiscussionForums when it aired originally and the post has over 10,000 views.
My sister and I completely irritated everyone in the house by our singing of this song. And being the big kid I am, we wrote our own lyrics to the tune about the dogs. Thankfully, I won't share that.
Actually I enjoyed all the Go Meat commercials from Hillshire Farms. This was another good one I thought.

Strange and Disgusting Commercials
What is going on with commercials lately. So many are gross, sexual, or just plain weird. And I have an appreciation for weird commercials, but I see so many that don't make me want to buy the product being advertised they just gross me out.
Earlier this evening I saw this burger king commercial, its one in a series dealing with a Whopper family. In this one the Whopper father is trying to tell Whopper Jr. about what happens when a Whopper man and woman love each other. Then he gets uncomfortable or doesn't know what to say so he gives Jr an extra napkin to keep in his wallet. I don't know about everyone else, but that didn't make me want to go to BK. It just creeped me out.
And just a moment ago there was one for Starburst. These two guys working at a zoo wearing wet suits because they are brushing a whale's teeth. One guy tries a 'juicy' Starburst and gives one to the other guy. They comment that it was a good thing they had wet suits on because they were so juicy. So then the whale pukes on them not once, but twice. Again, gross.
Fast food burger sex talks, puking whales. None of this makes me want to buy the products in the commercial.

Flipping Out
I love this show! Geez Bravo why do you have to make so many shows that I watch? And why have I been enjoying reality shows so much lately?

Learn to Cook from the Break-Dancing Martial Artist Priest
I'm a regular poster on Food Network Fans, and the other day I posted an article about Father Leo Patalinghug a 'break-dancing priest' who is going to have a cooking show on PBS this fall.
I had a chance to look into the show a little more in depth today. Here's a summary of what the show is all about...
It looks pretty awesome, too bad its not actually going to be on Food Network where it might get more Foodie exposure. There's a couple videos on the Grace Before Meals Website. This is totally something I'd watch, but I watch a lot of food stuff on TV anyway. Food Network, Top Chef, Hell's Kitchen, I enjoy them all. But unlike some of the shows mentioned previously this will have a positive message.
And after all, who wouldn't want to learn how to cook from a break-dancing, martial artist priest?

Grace Before Meals is a new television show coming to PBS dedicated to bringing families back to the table. Host Father Leo Patalinghug brings people from all walks of life into the kitchen to share his insights on cooking and strengthening relationships. Whether they're at a crossroads or have cause for celebration, Grace Before Meals creates fun and informative opportunities for people to feed themselves - body, mind and soul.

Popular TV show House Shows Unborn Child Grabbing Doc's Finger - Must See YouTube Clip
Popular TV show House Shows Unborn Child Grabbing Doc's Finger - Must See YouTube Clip
Riveting section considered to be one of television’s most memorable moments
By Hilary White
April 5, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A dramatic episode of the popular evening television drama, House, that shows an unborn child, from an opened womb, grasping a surgeon’s finger during surgery, has led to flood of Internet chatter.
The screenplay presents a 42 year-old, pregnant rock and roll photographer who suffers a stroke. Doctors discover the cause is a rare condition called Maternal Mirror Syndrome, in which the mother’s health mimics the distress level of her unborn child. The baby’s kidneys are failing, a situation that is likely to end in the death of both mother and child.
The diagnostician recommends abortion, steadfastly refusing to consider the unborn child a person and insisting on calling him a “fetus”, but the mother, Emma, adamantly refuses to consent. Emma begins to suffer life-threatening symptoms including jaundice and liver failure but she continues to refuse to abort and her child is two weeks away from viability.
Emma’s determination to save the life of her child convinces the doctor to try a revolutionary surgery in which the uterus is carefully removed from the mother, opened and the child treated and returned to the womb.
During the course of this delicate surgery the famously unemotional and sardonic doctor stands transfixed as the child reaches out of the uterus and grasps his finger with a tiny hand.

Star Trek, Snapshot in Thought
I have a really hard time getting to sleep most nights, and now that I don't have a job or class to go to I'm staying up later than I used to. During school it wasn't unusual for me to be up 1:30 - 2:00 am, but now it can go 2:30 - 4:30 (4:30 happens only rarely). But I end up watching a lot of TV, or finding shows that I like to watch late at night. So this post comes out of that inability to sleep many nights.
I've already written about how I like watching COPS and Dog the Bounty Hunter, but Monday night I ended up watching Star Trek: The Original Series. I'm actually sort of a fan of Star Trek the Next Generation, but I've never enjoyed TOS that much. But I found the episode Monday night enjoyable.
It was the episode where one alien's face was half black and half white, and the other was half white and half black. Their distaste for the color of the other lead to the downfall of their civilization, and eventually themselves. The added irony was that to Spock and everyone else they looked the same. The social commentary of Star Trek, TOS and TNG, is a bit like getting hit over the head with a frying pan isn't it? I usually get the giggles from it, because sometimes its just so obvious that it overtakes the plot.
So when it came to find something to watch last night I had three choices; COPS, Dog the Bounty Hunter, and Star Trek. I usually find COPS and Dog more fun when I can talk about it real time with a friend over AIM, so I opted for Star Trek. The episode last night was called The Mark of Gideon (thanks digital cable!), and again the social commentary was not a secret.
Kirk gets beamed down on this planet, but wakes up to find he is on the Enterprise, but nobody else is there. Then there is this beautiful girl dancing around that he kisses. Long story short, it was all a ruse to get this virus that is in Kirk's blood to infect the people of their planet, because they are over populated (even to the point apparently that they can't really move anywhere without bumping into people). See, look at the poor Gideons.

Apparently their world is germ-free and the people have super-long lifespans and the world is super-overpopulated. Kirk, horrified at this, offers to supply the Gideons with contraception to help control their population (who knew Kirk was the future love-child of Planned Parenthood and the United Nations?). The Gideons reply that they could not do this because they love and respect life, and creating life is important to them.
I guess I just found it so amusing to see how Star Trek acts like such a snapshot of thought from that era. In the same way that Star Trek: TNG tries to tackle subjects very clumsily and obviously. For example they had the anti-dealth penalty episode and the accepting people of various sexual inclinations episode.
Oh Star Trek, you're so funny.
