I was at this card shop yesterday buying a baby card. My boss from my last job just had his first child, so I was buying him a card. As I was paying the cashier and owner of the store noticed the pin I have on my purse, its of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She said she liked the pin and said her mother has a devotion to her. I was taken off guard by the comment and the only thing I could think to say was that I was surprised the pin hadn't fallen off yet. She said I must be meant to have it. She asked when her feast day was, saying she thought it was coming up, I confirmed that and said it was the 12th. I thanked the lady and left the store.
Later in the afternoon I went to work as usual, but I ended up staying late to help out. I took a later bus home, and it was a lot emptier than the one I usually take. I was sitting on the bus listening to my Zune when something on the floor caught my eye. It was my pin, it had fallen off when I got on the bus and was laying on the floor. I picked it up and put it inside my purse.
Its just so funny that I was commenting on being surprised that it hadn't fallen off yet and then a few hours later it did just that.

Interview Tomorrow
My interview is tomorrow. Last night I went and talked to our neighbor friend who was a teacher for many years (and most of it was in the Catholic schools). She suggested that I make a presentation on my laptop and bring it with me. I guess I'm going to do that. I'm not sure how it will go, but it will also allow my work to stand on its own and not rely solely on my descriptions. And if I have it all set up I won't have to worry about forgetting half the stuff I want to talk about.

A Call
Monday I dropped off two resumes at nearby schools. Today at 3:36 I got a call from one of them. And by 3:40 I had an interview. I'm absolutely excited and nervous. Between now and my Monday morning interview I need to brush up on Macs.
I'm so excited right now, but I'm also dreading the disappointment that has followed the other interviews I have been on. I know that if nothing comes of the interview I haven't lost anything and that I'll be at the same place I am now. We should live our lives always hopeful of things to come. But I fear the disappointment that often follows.

Politeness
All day long I smile at customers. I am not generally know for my (ahem pardon the pun on my name) Sunny disposition, but I go out of my way to be friendly and smile at people. Most of the time when I'm talking to customers its not a big deal, and a good percentage of the time it is a genuine smile, but even when its not completely I still do it. I'm working a cruddy job, for not much pay, but surprisingly it is very nice when customers reciprocate smiles and are friendly back. I'm always happier when we have a nice customer, and it influences my interactions with other customers.
When the kid at the fast food place is polite to you, be polite back, it makes the world a little bit nicer.

Real Life Stuffage
Sorry I haven't been around to blog lately. My Grandpa has been very ill this week (well he has been for the past 2 or 3 weeks, but it has continued this week) and its taking a toll on everyone. It would be easier if we didn't have to fight the medical profession the whole way trying to get help for him. But I don't really want to blog all the details here. Just please keep him and our family in your prayers.

Additionally, I'm still looking for a job. I have a job, but sitting with a degree and working at a fast food joint for $7/hr wasn't quite what I had in mind when I did all that work for school. Its just so hard to find anything that I'm qualified for. Its the same old "you need experience to get the job, but you can't get experience without a job". I know I shouldn't be feeling so sorry for myself, but I end up feeling that way anyway. A friend of mine graduated a year ago and she's working at a food place too, so I guess its not all that unusual. But like I said its not exactly what I had in mind... although now I think I wish I could go back and change my degree and get one that is more useful.

Job Hunt Again
I've just been having a couple really bad days. I'm really down about myself. Here I am sitting with a degree that cost I don't even know how many thousands of dollars and I'm working in a sandwich store. There isn't anything necessarily bad about the work itself, but I feel underused and underemployed. I sent in my resume to a couple of places that I really wanted to work, I went to one interview. She told me she'd let me know by that Wednesday, that was a few weeks ago. Wednesday evening I called and left a follow-up phone message to check in and see how things were going and I never did hear back. I guess I'm not even as disappointed that I apparently didn't get the position that they didn't even bother to return my call. I had another one just like that right after graduation, went to the interview they said they'd get back to me the next week and then nothing. People keep telling me that thats the way most of them go, but I'm starting to feel that maybe the sandwich store is the best I can do.

Dred Scott's Granddaughter Fights for Unborn
Today was my first day of work at a Quiznos. Its not bad, I felt stupid though because I didn't know how to do anything. Hopefully as the days go on I'll start to catch on.

Granddaughter of Famous US Black Slave Dred Scott Fights for Unborn Rights to End Abortion
Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, told the Baptist Press that pro-life advocates should take heart and keep in mind that although in 1856, "the pro-slavery forces in America were impregnable…pro-freedom forces were utterly triumphant less than a decade later."

Certification
I've been thinking about teaching. Actually its something that I was sure about before entering college, forgot about while I was there, and am back at now. The problem of course is that I'm not certified. I went on campus today to check out what you have to do to be get cetified and it looks like what they offer there is a 30 - 35 credit hour program. The problem of course is that to get a teaching job I need certification, and to get through this program I will need a job to pay for it.
I've heard that a Catholic school will hire you if you're working on your certification. But finding a school that will hire me is another story all together isn't it?
I love job hunting...

Job Hunt & More
As a roundoff to my posts, my job interview... did not go well. Even if they were to offer me a job at this point, I'm not sure I would want to be working there. I usually try to refrain from emoticons on this blog even though I am quite found of using them everywhere else, but this perfectly represents how I feel about the job hunt right now... :-\

I thought of this over the weekend, but I really like this hymn.
Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
Holy God, we praise Thy name--Lord of all, we bow before Thee! All on earth Thy scepter claim; all in heav'n above adore Thee: Infinite Thy vast domain, everlasting is Thy reign.
Hark, the loud celestial hymn angel choirs above are raising; cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, fill the heav'ns with sweet accord--Holy, holy, holy Lord!
Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit, three we name Thee; while in essence only one, undivided God we claim Thee, and adoring bend the knee, while we sing our praise to Thee.

Potato
Both Chris at Domestic Vocation and Esther at A Catholic Mom in Hawaii have had posts about potatos. I told Esther that I would have to find a picture of a sweet potato that we had that looked like a duck. Here it is!

Also, I have a job interview tomorrow at a certain national hardware chain.

Employment Novena Day 1
Well I turned in my last final today, so thats it. Graduation in January.
I told Dad that I need a couple of weeks to wallow in self-pity before looking for a job. But I'm going to start my novena for employment.
---
Opening Payer (for each day)
O God, through human work you contunually perfect and direct the immense work of creation. Listen to the prayers of your people, and grant to everyone employment that ennobles and elevates. Thus, more united with each other, we can serve our brothers and disters through our work. Through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.
Day 1: We are the work of God
Opening Prayer
For Meditation
In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.... (Genesis 1:1-2, 31)
Yet, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. (Isaiah 64:8)
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. (John 1:1-3)
To recall throughout the day
“But first seek the Kingdom and the will of God and all those things will be given to you also” (Matthew 6:33)
Closing Prayer (for each day)
Thank you, Lord, for this time of prayer for our loved ones and for ourselves. We are certain that with your grace we will not remain without dignified work. By participating in your creation, we will build up your kingdom here on Earth, a true society of brothers and sisters, united together as your children. Through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen.

About Me
- catholicandgop
- Catholic and politically conservative, I graduated with a BA in History (concentration in American) and Political Science. I'm between two parishes; one in Wisconsin that is fairly traditional, and one in Illinois that is fairly liberal. I teach CCD. I work in the food service industry, which basically means I'm working in fast food until I find a better job. I'd like to work for the church somehow. Right now I'm working on getting my teaching certification, although I'm unsure thats the correct path for me. This blog is as random as I am. I hope you enjoy.
